DSS stands up for kids

by Dennis Tivey, Communication & Outreach Coordinator

We're marking Child Abuse Prevention Month with events in your office, in the field, on the airwaves and on social media. Read on for campaign highlights, a tip sheet of prevention ideas, and photos from your office!

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, when the 22 agencies of the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) join hands to raise awareness and share strategies to prevent child abuse and neglect. "About 3000 cases of child abuse are investigated in the County each year," notes DSS manager and CAPC director Barbara Finch. "We want individuals, families, organizations and communities to know what they can do to prevent abuse and neglect."

This year's campaign theme is Community in Unity. Campaign highlights include the following:
  • This tip sheet shares ideas anyone can use to help prevent abuse and neglect. Use it, print it, share it!
  • Each day in April, we post a tip to the CAPC Facebook page. Visit and "Like" the page at www.facebook.com/sbc.capc.
  • CAPC members are receiving media support including a tip sheet, press release, talking points, posters, and suggested Tweets.
  • A Public Service Announcement with prevention tips and resources is running on North County Spanish-language radio.
  • The annual Pinwheel Planting awareness event is taking place in Lompoc. See TV coverage of it here.
  • CAPC members are wearing "Prevent Child Abuse" blue ribbon pins, and workplaces are holding "Wear Blue" Days to show support. See photos from your office below!
