Child Abuse Prevention Month

by Barbara Finch, Community Networks Director

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, an opportunity to appreciate the ways we work together to keep families safe and healthy. Everyone has a role to play in making sure that our community is a great place for children and youth to thrive. Whether acting as a concerned neighbor, a family member, a parent, or a County employee, we can prevent child abuse and neglect by helping parents be the best they can be.

Our Department plays a key role in strengthening families. Not only do we advocate for safe and nurturing families and communities, we address risk factors and intervene when necessary to protect children from harm. Our staff members provide a supportive environment where families can work through their challenges. We help with basic needs by providing economic assistance and access to nutritious food. We support healthy development by linking families to quality childcare and health insurance. We reduce family stress by helping parents develop job skills that will allow them to find work and support their families. When we encounter abuse and neglect, we work with families to help them make necessary changes and we ensure that children have safe homes, caring families, and therapeutic services to support their healing.

None of our work with families is possible without the support of our entire department. We need to be available, accessible, and welcoming to the people who seek our services in every region, and our Facilities Team makes sure that our work environments meet that need. The Human Resources Division cares for our employees by assisting with personnel matters and offering guidance and resources so that staff can focus on their work. Our Fiscal and Contracts Division makes sure that we have local, state and federal resources to fulfill our mission. Our IT Division makes sure that our record keeping, networking, and communications operate smoothly. Throughout our organization, our Administrative Team works tirelessly to keep us organized, informed, prepared, and on track. All of our staff help create a positive work environment where we support and acknowledge one another for the important work we do.

Preventing child abuse is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you for doing your part. Together we can stop child abuse and neglect.

There will be a limited amount of pinwheels distributed at each office. We encourage folks to take a pinwheel and take pictures to show your support. Please email pictures to Gloria Munoz.
