Does someone you know need affordable health coverage in 2023? The time to enroll is now. You might explain it something like this...
What is Covered California?
Covered California is the state’s online health insurance marketplace, where you can comparison-shop for a policy that meets your needs and budget. Insurance purchased through Covered California includes subsidies (based on income) that can reduce your cost (premiums and/or co-pays)—in some cases, to as low as zero. This subsidized insurance is called Covered California insurance or Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance.
You can enroll in this insurance only during an open enrollment period toward the end of each year (unless you experience certain qualifying life events).
Open Enrollment starts now!
The open enrollment period runs from November 1, 2022, through December 31, 2022. To get complete coverage for all of 2023 (starting on January 1, 2023), enroll by December 15, 2022. Shop and enroll at coveredca.com. Or, if you prefer, you can call 1 (800) 300-1506, or get free help from a certified enroller.
More people now qualify.
Changes under the federal Inflation Reduction Act this year make more people eligible for this coverage, and provide increased subsidies that can lower monthly payments.
Currently, 90% of Covered California enrollees qualify for financial help, and two-thirds of Covered California consumers are eligible for comprehensive health insurance coverage for $10 or less per month.
Medi-Cal is also available.
If you don’t qualify for Covered California / ACA insurance, you may qualify for Medi-Cal: a public health coverage program for people with a low income (or another qualifying factor). There is no open enrollment period for Medi-Cal: you can enroll in Medi-Cal year-round.
Medi-Cal coverage and Covered California / ACA insurance use the same application. Once you apply, you’ll find out which one you qualify for. (Some households qualify for both.)
Together we’re making progress.
The Affordable Care Act changed the rules around health insurance, leading to the establishment of Covered California and the expansion of Medi-Cal. In the decade since then, the rate of uninsured California residents has dropped from over 17% to 7%.
