Big changes for Collections!

By Mekala Manus, Compliance Division Chief

The new CalSAWS system has brought many changes, and some of the biggest changes are to Collections!

For many years, Social Services partnered with the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s (TTC) office to accept payments from DSS clients with an overpayment or overissuance. This is changing as of May 1, 2023, when all collections activities will move “in-house” at DSS. The other big change is that DSS is implementing online credit and debit card capabilities. Now our clients will have several convenient ways to make a payment: online, by mail, or in person at our offices.

What does this mean to DSS? We may be seeing a bit more traffic in our lobbies, as some folks still like to make payments in person. We do expect more call volume. If a client has questions regarding making repayment to DSS, please get them in touch with our Collections unit or refer them to our website.

Clients used to making payments at TTC have gotten a flyer with this information, and you may see posters in our lobbies. The posters match the flyers; both have additional details and payment instructions.

For more details, or to spread the word, please see these resources:

  • Flyer (2-sided, color, English/Spanish)
  • Poster (same content and appearance as flyer, available on request; contact Dennis Tivey and specify small wall poster, large wall poster, or medium foamcore-mounted poster for insertion in floor stand or sandwich board)
  • DSS public website article
  • Social media image

If a client has questions regarding making repayment to DSS, please refer them to any of the above, put them in touch with our Collections unit at (805) 681-4493, or have them visit us online at https://bit.ly/DSS-repayments.

We hope this transition is seamless with minimal disruption for our clients. Thank you for doing your part to connect them to Collections!
