Every summer, the Santa Maria Public Library holds planned storytime
events for children in our community. This summer, the theme was food and
nutrition – so it was a natural fit for DSS to be invited to attend the events
and inform parents and caretakers about CalFresh.
One of the summer programs featured a children’s storytime event in English and Spanish. It spanned seven weeks, two days a week, with each day specialized for either toddlers, preschoolers, or families. Six of these events were attended by Raina Osterbauer accompanied by either Gladys Lopez, Saul Manriquez, or Bernarda Martinez.
Our DSS staff arrived in the Enchanted Forest, also known as the
children’s section, and were introduced to the children and the adults by the
librarians. “We gave a brief explanation of the CalFresh program and the
different ways to apply for benefits,” said Osterbauer. “We let them know where
and how they could use an EBT card, highlighting the advantages of getting
assistance with stocking up on kitchen staples and being able to use CalFresh benefits
at selected Farmers Markets.” Storytime followed for half an hour. Afterward,
during toddler playtime, DSS staff remained available at a table to
confidentially answer queries, provide literature, or accept applications.
“It was great to reach a population in the community that may not
have known about the program,” said Osterbauer, “because many people are
unaware that they may qualify for benefits. We answered a lot of questions, and
collected some applications on the spot.”
This is a great example of outreach in the community. Thanks to
all the staff who participated!
