On February 10, 2024, DSS tabled at the 2-1-1 Community Day Celebration in Santa Maria, organized by CommUnify. This event brought together more than 50 organizations and proved to be a tremendous success, drawing approximately 1400 attendees. Its purpose was to foster community engagement, provide essential resources, and encourage collaboration among various organizations committed to enhancing the well-being of individuals and families in the area.
Attendees had the opportunity to access
information and receive giveaways from different organizations. One key focus
was on free health and human
services, which residents could learn about through the county’s 2-1-1 Help Line. Additionally, the
event offered no-cost vaccines and health screenings to promote
overall wellness within the community.
Notable guest speakers included 3rd District Supervisor Joan Hartmann and Mayor Jenelle Osborne.
Attendees could
inquire about their DSS case status and eligibility for benefits, receiving assistance
with applications. Staff members were equipped to provide real-time updates on
case statuses and verify active medical coverage.
The event also facilitated networking among
various agencies, allowing them to exchange valuable information and resources.
Agencies shared details about their services, including childcare assistance for undocumented clients and weatherproofing services.
Perhaps one of the most impactful moments was
when the event led to a job
placement for an attendee. A client approached the booth inquiring
about his CalFresh case status and
expressed his need for employment in the food industry. Our staff acted
swiftly, flagging down the event coordinator to inquire about job services
agencies. The client was directed to the Lyons booth, and he later returned to our booth, expressing
gratitude for the connection that ultimately helped him secure a job!
This heartwarming example highlights the
effectiveness of networking and collaboration among agencies. It demonstrates
how events like the 2-1-1 Community Day Celebration can truly make a difference
in people’s lives.
