International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, celebrated annually on October 17, highlights the urgent need to address the systemic causes of poverty and promote social and economic inclusion. Established by the United Nations in 1992, this day serves as a platform for raising awareness and advocating for the rights of those living in poverty. Each year, the theme calls for collective action to empower the impoverished, fostering a global dialogue on how best to eradicate poverty and ensure equitable opportunities for all.

As we observe the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we want to recognize the collective effort of everyone in the department—those who administer public assistance programs, protect our vulnerable populations, and provide vital support behind the scenes. Together, you make a profound difference in the lives of thousands of people across our community, helping them overcome the many barriers of poverty.

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), utilizes the California Poverty Measure (CPM) to measure poverty, accounting for the unique geographic differences in the cost of living and diverse safety net resources that families use to meet their needs.  According to PPIC, Santa Barbara County has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, with 16.9% of the population and 19.5% of children living in poverty. That’s nearly 70,000 people facing challenges like high living costs, limited healthcare access, and food insecurity.

This is where your work becomes life-changing:

·         Medi-Cal helps low-income individuals and families access vital healthcare, breaking down one of the biggest barriers that keep people in poverty. By providing timely and preventative healthcare, Medi-Cal ensures that individuals can stay healthy, work consistently, care for their families, and avoid crushing medical debt. Your role in making this possible creates a pathway for better health and economic stability.

·         CalFresh allows families to afford nutritious food, which is essential for health, well-being, and productivity. By tackling food insecurity head-on, CalFresh doesn’t just alleviate hunger—it gives families the ability to make healthier choices and lays the foundation for long-term well-being. The access you provide to this program means that families can focus on growth, education, and work rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from. PPIC estimates that the CalFresh program alone reduces poverty rates by 3%.

·         CalWORKs offers financial assistance and employment services to families, ensuring they have the support they need to stabilize their lives and work toward self-sufficiency. By offering cash assistance, housing aid, childcare, and job training, this program empowers families to overcome short-term challenges while building a stronger, more stable future. Your work in administering and supporting this program helps families break free from intergenerational poverty.

These programs are making a tangible difference. Today, 44% of Santa Barbara County’s population—over 196,000 people and 91,000 families—benefit from at least one of these services, reducing the county’s overall poverty rate by an estimated 6%. The work you do directly lifts people out of poverty, giving them hope, opportunity, and the chance to achieve economic independence.

To everyone in the department—whether you work directly with clients or provide essential support to those who do—your dedication is building a better future for our community. As we commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, remember that the work you do helps to create a world where opportunity, health, and stability are within everyone’s reach.

Thank you for being a part of this mission, and for your continued efforts to support those in need. Together, we are making lasting change, one family at a time.
