Preparing for the Unexpected: DSS Staff Trained in Disaster Shelter Operations

By Yolanda Salgado-Tovar, Department Business Specialist

On February 26, 2025, seven staff members from the Department of Social Services (DSS) participated in a comprehensive Disaster Shelter Worker training session, organized in collaboration with the City of Carpinteria and led by experienced trainers from the American Red Cross.

During this essential training, staff learned the critical skills required to effectively set up and manage a disaster shelter in the event of an emergency evacuation. As the lead agency for Mass Care and Shelter in the county, DSS plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of community members during crises.

The primary objective of the training was to enhance our preparedness and ability to respond swiftly and efficiently when emergencies arise. By equipping our staff with the knowledge and tools necessary for effective disaster response, we strive to ensure that everyone has access to safe shelter and support during challenging times.

DSS remains committed to continuous training and improvement, reinforcing our mission to serve and protect our community in times of need.
