National Civility Month

Every August, we observe National Civility Month—a timely reminder that the way we treat each other matters. In a world filled with rapid communication, diverse perspectives, and complex challenges, civility is more than just good manners; it is the foundation of healthy communities, meaningful relationships, and productive collaboration.

This year’s theme, “Better Together,” encourages us to reflect on the collective power of kindness, respect, and empathy. It invites us to see beyond our differences and work toward a shared future—one where civility is not just practiced but deeply valued.

What Is Civility?

Civility is often mistaken for politeness alone, but it goes much deeper. It encompasses active listening, open dialogue, respect for differing opinions, and a commitment to constructive engagement. It doesn’t require uniformity in belief or background—only a shared commitment to mutual dignity.

Why “Better Together”?

The theme “Better Together” is both a reminder and a call to action. When we embrace civility in our daily lives, we become stronger as families, neighborhoods, workplaces, and nations. Working together—through respectful conversation and cooperative spirit—yields greater innovation, resilience, and understanding.

Whether it's resolving a workplace conflict with professionalism, showing patience during a disagreement, or offering a helping hand to a neighbor, civility reminds us that unity does not mean sameness. It means standing together with integrity and compassion.

Civility in Action

Here are a few ways to live the “Better Together” message this National Civility Month:

  • Listen first. Before responding, take the time to understand others’ perspectives.
  • Speak with kindness. Words matter. Choose them with care, especially in moments of disagreement.
  • Practice empathy. Consider what others might be feeling before making judgments.
  • Celebrate diversity. Our differences, when respected, make us stronger.
  • Be a role model. Civility is contagious. Set the tone for respectful behavior in your circle.

A Civil Future Starts Now

As we celebrate National Civility Month, let’s commit to building a culture where empathy is more powerful than ego, and dialogue is more important than dominance. In our homes, schools, social feeds, and public forums, we have the opportunity to shape a more respectful, inclusive world—together.

Because when we choose civility, we choose unity. And when we choose unity, we truly become Better Together.
