On February 5, 2026, five dedicated DSS employees successfully completed Emergency Shelter Training at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall in Solvang, alongside Red Cross volunteers, City of Solvang and City of Buellton staff. Rolling up their sleeves, participants gained hands-on experience setting up cots, supporting shelter feeding operations, and learning what it takes to establish and operate an emergency shelter when residents are required to evacuate their homes.

Preparedness happens before an emergency, and not during a disaster. This practical training helps ensure DSS staff are ready to respond quickly, compassionately, and effectively. Their readiness strengthens our community’s emergency response and ensures that help is available when it is needed most.

Congratulations to our newest hero network members: Laura Monreal, Blair Conner, Dennis Tivey, Nicole Ruhl, Ariana Garcia and thank you for stepping forward to serve and protect our community in times of need!
