Charitable Giving Campaign kicks off

Your contributions can help local kids succeed like Angelica.
by Judi Sotelo, APS SSW Sr PSL

The Santa Barbara County Charitable Giving Campaign begins September 5 and runs through October 13. The campaign offers a convenient way to make a tax-deductible contribution to your choice of local or statewide nonprofit agencies: you pick the agency and the amount. And, everyone who donates will be entered in weekly raffles for prizes. Every year we run this campaign because of people like Angelica, the student in the photo above. To learn more about the campaign, and Angelica's story, read on!

Angelica's story

Angelica remembers her first day of Fun in the Sun as “paradise”. She had spent her previous summers at home, bored with her younger brothers, because there were no other affordable summer learning programs in her neighborhood. Through summers at Fun in the Sun, Angelica was introduced to new and wonderful activities, like art classes, character-building activities, wilderness trips, and more. The literacy improvement curriculum provided through Fun in the Sun ensured that she had the skills and grades she would need in high school and college. Angelica graduated from U.C. Berkeley and recently finished her M.A. in Education at Northeastern Illinois University.

Fun in the Sun, a 6-week summer learning program, is one of the programs supported by our local United Way. It addresses summer learning loss and works to close the opportunity gap between lower-income and mid/upper-income students.

Your contributions

You can choose to contribute on a one-time or continuing basis. Many people contribute directly to United Way, supporting their programs (such as Fun in the Sun) and the organizations they fund. You can direct your gift towards any region in the county. Additionally, you may also direct your donation to any 501c3 nonprofit organization. Two popular choices are Earthshare of California and Community Health Charities of California.

How to participate

Each DSS employee will receive a pledge form with their employee ID and information already filled out. To donate, you simply complete the form and sign the back, and then turn it in to the volunteer site representative in your office:

There will also be some special events throughout the campaign, culminating in the Online Basket Auction from October 7-12.
