Every March we celebrate Social Work Month. This year’s theme is “Social Workers are Essential” to highlight the invaluable contributions social workers make in our society. This has never been truer than during this last year, as we have faced the many challenges brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Social workers are dedicated to helping people overcome barriers and improving lives, especially among the most vulnerable. They effect positive change with individuals, families, groups and communities. As a profession, social workers frequently use their collective power to promote policies that give more people access to community services and benefits, improving the quality of life for everyone. Social work is the only helping profession that requires advocacy as part of its professional code of ethics, seeking to advance the rights of the most marginalized in society, making our nation a more equitable and inclusive place.
During the COVID-19 public health emergency, social workers bravely continued in their role as front-line emergency responders, providing critical support to the most vulnerable children, families, and adults when they needed it the most.
Every day, social workers:
- Bear witness to unimaginable pain, suffering, and trauma
- Encourage and support, holding space for hope and change even when others cannot see or believe it
- Act as agents of change, enhancing capacity for courage, strength, and resilience in overcoming adversity
- Show up and make a difference, impacting people in positive and life changing ways.
