Hunger Action Month: A Call to Combat Food Insecurity

September is Hunger Action Month: a poignant reminder that millions of Americans, including children and families, struggle to access adequate, nutritious food. It's a call to action for individuals, communities, and policymakers to unite in the fight against food insecurity.

Food insecurity is a pervasive issue in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in 2020, over 38 million people, or 11.1% of U.S. households, experienced food insecurity at some point during the year. This year, the problem has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of additional income and food supports that were added at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. New data from the Census Bureau indicates that the child poverty rate more than doubled from 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% in 2022 as enhanced pandemic benefits expired.

One of the most crucial tools in addressing food insecurity is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as CalFresh in California. CalFresh provides eligible low-income individuals and families with funds to purchase food, helping them put nutritious meals on the table. It's a lifeline for millions of Americans facing hunger.

This program has a substantial impact on individuals and families facing food insecurity. It helps provide children with access to the nourishment they need to grow and thrive. It improves stability for adults struggling to make ends meet, so they can devote more of their focus to education and employment. It not only provides immediate relief, but also stimulates the local economy by increasing consumer spending local markets and grocery stores, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.

Here at DSS, we are involved in the fight against hunger by administering CalFresh at the County level. There are numerous further ways to get involved during Hunger Action Month. Consider volunteering at a local food bank, donating non-perishable items, or participating in fundraising events. Additionally, raising awareness about the importance of SNAP / CalFresh and advocating for policies that support these programs can make a significant difference in the fight against hunger.

Hunger Action Month reminds us that hunger is an issue we can collectively address. By supporting programs like CalFresh, advocating for policies that combat food insecurity, and taking action within our communities, we can work toward a future where no one goes to bed hungry.
