Each year on October
17, the world observes the International
Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a time to reaffirm our shared
commitment to ending poverty in all its forms. This year’s theme, “Ending social and institutional
maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families,” resonates
deeply with the mission and daily work of the Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services.
DSS plays a vital role in empowering the families in our
community to overcome economic challenges and achieve self-sufficiency. From
food assistance to health coverage, and from child welfare to elder care, DSS
programs directly improve quality of life for tens of thousands of county
residents.
Thanks to the efforts of every single person in this
department our impact is significant:
- 55,409
individuals in 32,559 households receive CalFresh food
benefits, totaling more than $11.2 million in assistance issued in
a single month.
- 2,751
families and 5,504 children receive CalWORKs support,
helping parents secure employment and build stable futures.
- Nearly
180,000 residents are enrolled in Medi-Cal, ensuring access
to essential health care services.
- Child
Welfare Services ensures the safety of 412 children in foster care.
- The In-Home
Supportive Services (IHSS) program supports 4,988 older adults and
people with disabilities, enabling them to live safely and
independently at home.
- Meanwhile,
Adult Protective Services actively manages 623 open cases,
protecting vulnerable adults from neglect and abuse.
These figures represent more than statistics. They reflect
thousands of individual stories of resilience and community care. DSS’s
dedicated staff work every day to connect people with opportunities, resources,
and hope.
On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty,
DSS joins others around the world in recognizing that ending poverty is not
only a global goal but a local responsibility. By strengthening social
services, supporting families, and fostering respect and equity, Santa Barbara
County continues to make meaningful strides toward a future where everyone can
thrive.
